Misgiving: How Our Infatuation with Building Permanent Charitable Funds is Hurting the Very People and Causes We’re Trying to Help

Guest Speaker: Alan Kantor

Charitable gift planners spend their careers facilitating the donation of major gifts, but Alan Cantor suggests that we don’t spend enough time thinking about the charitable impact of the kinds of gifts we’re creating. Yes, endowments are the default vehicle for major gifts – but by putting away charitable dollars for the future, do donors undercut impact today? Alan will examine the pros and cons of endowment building, analyze the staggering growth of other permanent vehicles – foundations and donor-advised funds – and suggest innovative strategies for more effective use of charitable dollars that would benefit donors, nonprofits, and the community alike.

The morning will include Alan’s presentation, followed by small and large group discussions. This is a topic that is both philosophical and pragmatic. Be prepared to question your assumptions!
